My new computer does not have a serial connector for my old machine.
Answer:
What you need is a USB-Serial adapter. There are many different brands of adapters on the market, but not all of them will work with your machine. We sell you an adapters for $30.00, that has been tested with all of our machines and all Windows systems.
Installation:
Do it yourself and read the bottom of this page
or
you call our store and make an appointment with Gregor and he will help you installing it.
Do it yourself method:
If you're computer savvy you will be able to read the direction that comes with the adapter and install it with no problem. Install the driver first before you plug in the adapter!
Step1: Plug USB/Serial cable into your computer’s USB port.
Step2: Open the “ Control Panel “, double click on “System”, select the “Hardware” tab, then click on “Device Manager” and check if there is the device you install under Ports (COM&LPT) “USB to Serial (COM4)”
Step3: Now this is the most important part! If it is COM1, COM2, COM3, OR COM4 go to Step7.) and remember the COM port number.
If the COM port number is above 4 keep on reading.
Note: In any Bernina or Pfaff Software program you only be able to select COM port’s between 1 and 4 to read and write to your machine.
Step4: If the port number is above 4 double click on that line. (The one "USB to Serial") the next picture will come up.

Step5: Select the “Port Settings” tab. Then click on the “Advanced” button. You will see the below picture, after you click the “dropdown” for the COM Port Number.

Step6: Now choose a COM port between 1 and 4 that is not in use!!! In the picture above it would be COM2.
Remember that Number!!!
Click “OK”
Very Important:
After you close the “Advanced Settings Window” and you get back to (Device Manager) the COM setting will still be the same as you saw it in the first place. (somewhere above 4) Don’t let that irritate you. It will be the COM port you just selected next time you start your computer!!!!
Step7: Close all the windows you have opened on your desktop. Then start your BERNINA Software program. When the time comes to select the COM port to write/read to your machine, select the number I told you to remember!
If you do not read the following...
YOU WILL BE IN TROUBLE!!
Please “mark” the USB port on your computer where your new cable is plugged in now. The next time you would like to send something to your machine and you plug this cable into another USB port on your computer, the COM port number will change and you have no clue what to select when you want to write/read to your machine!
Happy Embroidery!
